Urban botanist and designer, avid cyclist, inventor, and adventure seeker.
The earliest memory I have is from when I was about 3, walking around the garden holding my dad's hand. So it is no surprise that I have ended up in a profession where I have the opportunity to create and restore natural systems in our urban environments.
Currently, I am a designer with Sasaki Associates. I have been working in the landscape architecture profession for about six years. The focus of my professional interests are in urban design, ecological sustainability, on-structure landscapes and green roofs, planting design and theory, park planning and design, healthy communities, master planning, recreation planning and design, and transportation design.
I have a Masters in Landscape Architecture (MLA) from the University of California at Berkeley. The culmination of my graduate work was a thesis: "Planting On-Structure: Ecological considerations and design challenges," 2006.
I did my undergraduate studies at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and have a BS in Plant Sciences and Scientific Illustration.
I am also a published illustrator in: "Plant Resins: Chemistry, Evolution, Ecology and Ethnobotany," Dr. Jean Langenheim, Timber Press, 2003 (56 pen and ink drawings and maps). Two of the illustrations from this volume are now part of the permenant collection at the Hunt Museum for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University. This work was initiated from my undergraduate thesis: “Exploring Botany Through Scientific Illustration,” 2001.
My wife is somewhat of a blog celebrity and is the co-founder of Blogher, a women's blog and media start-up. [She can be found at: www.jorydesjardins.com and www.blogher.org].
